Warkworth WI news Summer 2016
This summer Warkworth WI has enjoyed evenings of good food and good books and an afternoon of sunshine and ice creams! The fun started with the June meeting when 37 of us met at the Old Boat House for a delicious meal enjoyed by all. This had been ably organized by June who was warmly thanked. Returning to our usual format for the July meeting in the Memorial Hall 31 members and 1 visitor listened to a talk given by a local author, Caroline Roberts. She gave us an insight into what it is like to be an author and how determined she had to be to become a successful published author. All of her books are set in Northumberland. Caroline concluded her talk by first reading a very moving extract from her first published novel, The Torn Up Marriage which left us all spellbound. She then read a second excerpt from her next novel, The Cosy Teashop in the Castle which was equally enthralling. There were lots of questions and June gave a vote of thanks. On a sunny afternoon in August members met in the Braid car park and wandered over to the Harbour Village to meet other members there. Some went on to walk the pier, others took tea at the Old Boat House and many ended up at Spurelli’s for ice cream.
Members are looking forward to the Warkworth Show where the members’ competition is for a homemade shopping bag, for which a workshop was held on the 11th July. We wish Kate and Serena good luck in the national competition for a flower basket made out of an old bra; fortunately sending a photo of this unusual basket is all that is needed.
A reminder that the next meeting will be on September 6th when our speaker will be Jonathan Ewen talking to us about the ‘Shelter Box’ charity and the competition is for a high energy snack.
