Warkworth WI Meeting April 3rd 2018
We began our April meeting with a short silence, to reflect upon the life and achievements of late member, Margaret Burrell.
Miss Margaret Burrell, seen here cutting the cake on the 95th birthday of our W.I., November, 2017
President Serena Coulter congratulated the team who won the quiz at Shilbottle and mentioned the successful presentation of certificates for winning dishes in the competition at the Coach Inn. She had attended a 100th birthday party of the Northumberland Federation with some of our members and showed the booklet that had been written by W.I. advisers, outlining the history of the decades. Newer members were invited to sign the tablecloth for later embroidery.
Correspondence was received about a Federation trip to Northumberlandia and “Down your Way” at Longhoughton and Boulmer W.I., in their 100th year celebrations. Formation of a walking group is suggested and Anne Cashmore reported on the Plastics Action Group she has set up.
Mr Rob Wilson was the speaker for the evening and shared his extensive knowledge of poisonous plants and the role they had played throughout history. This stretched from Stone Age poison tipped arrows, executions by poison in Ancient Greece, the Borgias and Victorian incidences of poison, to modern usage by such as Dr Harold Shipman and foreign powers [allegedly]. He commented that poison is often the murder weapon of choice for women but didn’t give us any instructions for use! It was a most interesting talk and as a thank you, Rob was presented with some of his chosen poison – a bottle of red wine!
Birthday flowers were given to Audrey Jones and the competition for a spring posy was won by Pat Dodd, Jan Shotton, second and Kate Burnham, third.
The next meeting is on May 1st , the Annual Meeting, and will be attended by a W.I. adviser. Members will provide a pooled supper and the competition is for an item knitted or crocheted from 50g of wool.
